Retiring Moana Pool plant supervisor Kevin Brown says he is proud to work at the pool he considers New Zealand's best.

Mr Brown (63) finishes work today after 36 years.

In that time he had seen the Dunedin facility expand from three pools to seven, and the addition of a gymnasium.

Staff numbers had increased from 30, to nearly 150.

"It's still the best pool in New Zealand to my mind."

Visitors were often surprised by how old Moana was, when it looked so new.

Mr Brown's job had changed since 1974.

In less health and safety-conscious days, there was less compliance and more straightforward maintenance.

The job included responsibility for all Dunedin city pools.

He congratulated the Dunedin City Council for "finding the budget" to upgrade the pool.

His greatest pleasure had been watching the joy children and their families got from pool visits.

When visiting from the North Island, his grandchildren requested a trip to "Granddad's pool", he said.

Mr Brown and wife, Heather, are moving to Alexandra, where he will enjoy mountain-biking, sailing and gardening.
