The group's spokeswoman, Emilie Rakete, said they picketed outside the office and those in Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton to protest against the treatment of a transgender woman held in Spring Hill Corrections Facility in Waikato.
She claimed the woman's treatment was ``akin to torture''. The facility is a men's prison.
Fairfax Media reported Corrections Central regional commissioner Terry Buffery yesterday as saying the department was performing a work programme to help support transgender prisoners.
