'Suspicious' High St fire under investigation

Dunedin Police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand are investigating a suspicious fire in the city centre, which had the potential to cause serious injury.

Fire appliances from Dunedin City fire station were called to a wheelie bin fire outside a flat on High St, near Melville St, about 3.30am on Saturday.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said the fire had jumped to the window frame of the flat and had the potential to set the building on fire also.

The fire was quickly extinguished and no-one was injured, he said.

However, the fire was deemed to be suspicious and an investigation had begun.

Anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area or has information about the fire, should contact Dunedin police (03) 471-4800, Crimestoppers 0800-555-111.
