Table leg used in assault on officers

A wooden table leg was used in an assault on two Dunedin police officers called to a domestic disorder incident last night.

The officers were called to a Kenmure Rd, Mornington, property about 11pm, Inspector Jason Guthrie said.

When they arrived a man opened the door and assaulted one of the officers, at one stage using a broken leg from a wooden table.

The officer sustained cuts, grazing and bruising to his arms, but he was ''saved from major injury by his body armour'', Insp Guthrie said.

The officer's colleague came to his aid and was assaulted by a woman who hit him in the mouth, resulting in moderate facial injuries.

A 42-year-old woman and 49-year-old man were arrested and are set to appear in Dunedin District Court today.

The man has been charged with assault with a blunt instrument, assault with intent to injure and resisting police.

The woman is facing charges of being unlawfully in a building, obstruction, common assault and assault on police.

Both officers were treated for their injuries, before choosing to return to duty.
