Dog walkers can put their minds at ease after Dunedin Land Search and Rescue’s (LandSAR) recent search of John Wilson Ocean Dr failed to find any further sign of rat poison.

Several dogs were poisoned by rat bait along the popular walking spot late last month after it appeared someone vandalised a Dunedin City Council bait station and intentionally laid the greeny-blue matchbox-sized bait cubes around a rubbish bin.

The dogs made full recoveries after receiving veterinary treatment.

Since then, many people had stopped taking their dogs to the area near St Kilda Beach.

Earlier this week, about 30 members of the LandSAR team searched for remnants of the poison, as part of the team’s training.

LandSAR chairman Jamie Hughes said the "really intense search" covered the area around the rubbish bin at the 300m mark, as well as along the edges of the drive, 200m either side of the bins.

"We didn’t find any remnants of rat poison, but we did find a lot of rubbish.

"We were finding little bits of lolly wrappers and things like that, and golf balls and all sorts of stuff through there.

"So we picked them up and put them away."

Mr Hughes said they could not be 100% certain, but he was more confident about the safety of dogs in the area.

"I feel a little more comfortable as a dog owner myself. I’ll take my guys along there."
