SSV Robert C Seamans, one of two tall ship research vessels operated by the Sea Education Association, motors up the Otago Harbour to Dunedin yesterday afternoon.

The 41m-long steel sailing brigantine runs an undergraduate academic study abroad programme.

This includes intensive research in oceanography, maritime studies, nautical science and hands-on experience aboard a traditional sailing ship.

It is equipped with hydrographic winches, bathymetric equipment, biological and geological sampling equipment, a wet/dry laboratory, and a computer laboratory.

It is typically based in the Pacific Ocean, sailing between California, Hawaii and Tahiti.

The vessel arrived from Wellington yesterday, and will depart at 11am on Monday, for Christchurch.
