Teachers left in the dark

Dunedin teachers say they have been left in the dark about changes to the English curriculum, which include compulsory Shakespeare and grammar lessons.

PPTA Otago regional chairman Kussi Hurtado-Stuart said there were some concerns about the lack of information teachers had received about the English curriculum refresh so far.

Mr Hurtado-Stuart said teachers had received little information.

"The lack of information is something we have come to expect with this government."

It was hard to tell what the changes would look like after their rollout, he said.

An English teacher told him she was concerned the curriculum was being used as an "ideological football".

"The last government did a refresh and there was a wealth of Maori artists put forward to do that work.

"This seems to be with a change of government a huge shift back."
