Terror images sent in greeting card

An unsolicited envelope containing a disc detailing graphic terrorist activities has alarmed its recipient and caused Dunedin police to issue a warning.

Acting Senior Sergeant Chris George said the retired Mosgiel man contacted Dunedin police after looking at some of the images on the disc, which arrived at his home in a non-Christmas greeting card.

"He had a peek and was upset. They are quite disturbing, very graphic terrorist images."

Asked if they showed acts such as beheadings, Acting Snr Sgt George said that while he had not viewed the images, he understood that to be the case.

It was likely the images were downloaded from the internet, he said.

The man was "just Joe Normal" and was at a loss to explain why he had received the mail.

Acting Snr Sgt George declined to say where the card was sent from, but confirmed "it was addressed to the complainant".

New Zealand Post had been notified and was unaware of any similar incidents, Acting Snr Sgt George said.

Anyone receiving an unsolicited card in the mail containing a disc was warned not to view the material, and report the incident to their nearest police station, he said.

The matter was being investigated by the Dunedin CIB.

The perpetrators could face charges of distributing objectionable material and charges under the Postal Act.
