The Dunedin City Council is applauding the actions of members of the public who helped clean up a big spill of bean bag beans in St Kilda yesterday.

A member of the public noticed the beans apparently dumped in John Wilson Ocean Dr yesterday morning.

They rang the council but after noticing local sea birds were eating the synthetic beans, they and other members of the public decided to take matters into their own hands, cleaning up the mess before it could spread to the beach or be eaten by more wildlife.

Council waste and environmental solutions group manager Chris Henderson said the council wanted to "thank the community-minded people who decided to clean up the mess themselves before it spread any further".

"Dumping like this is illegal, so we always encourage people to report it — not only so we can clean up, but also because they may provide information to help us identify who did it," he  said.
