The vehicle caught fire while travelling south towards Dunedin on State Highway 1, at the passing lane between Russell and Whites Roads, about 6.30am, police said.
The driver was not hurt.
Two lanes were open to traffic, but police said motorists should be aware of the site and slow down while passing.
The truck would be removed over the next couple of hours and this could cause disruptions to traffic.
Police asked drivers to be patient if there were delays.
