It is large, but not quite large enough to be a big sister — more of a twin perhaps.

Dunedin welcomed the cruise ship Anthem of the Seas to Port Chalmers yesterday.

Part of the Royal Caribbean fleet, Anthem is a sister ship to Ovation of the Seas, which has been a regular visitor to Port Chalmers over the past few years.

But this summer, Ovation of the Seas is in Asian waters and was sailing off Malaysia yesterday afternoon.

Anthem of the Seas has taken its place and had its first visit to Dunedin yesterday.

Both ships have a capacity of about 4180 passengers and a crew of about 1500.

The length and height of the two ships are near enough equivalent.

Anthem of the Seas, which will call at Dunedin four more times this summer, has a 100m-high observation pod, which lifts above the deck, a skydiving pod simulator and 18 restaurants.

It was scheduled to leave Port Chalmers about 8pm yesterday, bound for Lyttelton.
