Two men received stab injuries in a "family violence" incident in Forfar St, Dunedin, last night.

One, younger, man was taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance, apparently with stab wounds. An older man apparently left the scene in a vehicle after the incident, which was reported to police at 7.22pm.

It is understood  no-one else was involved in the incident, which apparently involved domestic conflict, and that the man who left the scene may have received stab wounds to one arm and his stomach.

Police using several mobile patrols and at least one police dog later searched for the man, including in nearby South Rd and Law St and  several other locations, for more than 90 minutes.

And it is understood  the man rang his partner via mobile phone later in the evening, when she was supporting the other injured man at Dunedin Hospital.

She apparently pleaded with the caller to seek help, and a police officer also spoke to him and encouraged him to turn himself in to receive treatment.

It is understood  the injured man may have later turned himself in to police, but that could not be confirmed by police last night.

Asked if the health of the man who had left the house was at risk, or if he presented any risk to the public, or if he had been located and treated, a police call centre spokesman said "there are no further details".

"However, we can confirm we are making further inquiries," he said.

"We are able to confirm that we responded to a call about a stabbing at an address on Forfar St."

He said Dunedin police had wanted to exercise discretion, under the circumstances, about the incident, but  some further information could be available today.
