Students searching for a bite to eat between exams have their options limited this year.
The University of Otago has closed three food outlets early as it attempts to limit a $2 million shortfall in its Campus and Collegiate Life Service division.
Hunter Cafe, Frankly Sandwiches, and Lab Cafe all closed at the end of September, while Union Grill has been closed all year.
A financial review for the period ending on August 31 was included in the University Finance and Budget Committee’s meeting earlier this month.
While the division was budgeted to contribute $4.5 million to the University, its actual contribution was $2.5 million.
The report said the impact of Covid-19 had resulted in fewer customers and staff shortages, impacting the ability to operate food outlets.
"This loss of income is not expected to recover by year end," it said.
Student Bless (21), who did not want her last name used, said she missed the food outlets, especially Union Grill.
Because the "normal" food shops were shut, and she and her friends often had to go further afield.
"We walk all the way to town, or to the campus shop."
Division acting director Stephen Baughan said an updated figure would be reported to the next university council meeting, but the September and August figures were in line.
"The current economic environment has led to a downturn in business activity, coupled with fewer students and staff on campus," he said.
The division also ran six other food outlets, which were set to close in December.
He did not specify which outlets would be open next year.
It was expected campus would be busy, and food outlets would operate to meet demand, he said.
