A Dunedin teenager caught shoplifting from an inner-city department store asked officers if she could give them the clothes she was wearing as they had also been stolen.

The 16-year-old had been caught in a nearby supermarket on Wednesday afternoon after staff at the department store noticed she had shoplifted and reported her to police.

Officers quickly located her and took her to Dunedin Central Police Station.

While speaking to police, she admitted to the shoplifting and added the clothes she was wearing had also been stolen from another store nearby.

She changed into new clothes and returned all the stolen goods.

Police have also charged her over another historic shoplifting incident in Oamaru.

All three shoplifting charges were referred to Youth Aid.
