Speaking about the university's ''Statement of Service Performance 2012'' at its recent council meeting, Prof Hayne said the university had performed well across all the areas of performance it measured.
When it came to ''achieving research excellence'' she singled out its performance in two different world rankings.
''We are extremely proud of the fact that we continue to be New Zealand's top university in terms of the citation components of the annual Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and the QS World University Rankings.''
''This variable reflects the high quality of research output produced by University of Otago staff,'' she said.
The university continued to be top in New Zealand when it came to competing for funding from the Marsden and Health Research Council funds, but the ''shrinking size of these funding pools in both real and relative terms is a concern''.
She pointed out that the university's focus on research did not come at the cost of teaching and that it had also performed well in the area of ''achieving excellence in research-informed teaching''.
Prof Hayne was pleased with the way the university had performed financially.
''I am extremely pleased with the financial performance of this university, particularly in light of current financial pressures.''
The university was also happy with its performance when it came to ensuring outstanding campus environments, contributing to the national good and to international progress and building and sustaining capability.
