Freezing conditions meant  a slippery start for motorists across Dunedin yesterday.

Police were called to ice-related crashes on State Highway 1 in the wider Dunedin area, a police spokeswoman said.

A SUV hit ice on the highway and crashed into a ditch in East Taieri at 7.15am, she said.

A few kilometres south, a ute left the highway in Allanton and ended up in  a ditch  at 8.15am, she said.

A vehicle hit ice and crashed into a ditch on SH1 south of Karitane, near Apes Rd, at 9.45am, she said.

No-one was injured in the crashes, she said.

MetService meteorologist Tom Bell said it was a freezing start for many parts of  Dunedin including -4.6degC for Middlemarch, -1.4degC at Waitati and 0degC for Dunedin Airport.

The cloud covering the district last night would result in a slightly warmer start today, he predicted.
