More than 200 Dunedin passengers have enjoyed rides on historical buses operated by volunteers on Christmas Day.

An Otago Heritage Bus Society spokesman said 208 passengers were transported between St Clair and Normanby on Christmas Day.

For 10 hours, two former Christchurch red and white buses were driven by volunteers, some of whom were wearing historical bus driver uniforms.

The rides were made possible by the Tramway Historical Society working in conjunction with the Otago Heritage Bus Society, the spokesman said.

One Dunedin resident who went for a Christmas ride said the heritage bus service was "great" and quite busy.
