Water fight getaway (flip-)flops

Adam Turner has learnt the hard way that you do not bring a pair of jandals to a water fight.

The 11-year-old took part in St Leonard’s School’s annual last-day-of-school water fight for the last time yesterday.

Adam opted to use a bucket as his weapon of choice, unlike his classmates who went for more traditional approaches with water guns.

The experienced year 6 pupil said water guns just did not hold as much water as buckets.

"When you have buckets, you can [pour water] down their backs to make it extra cold."

However, in the middle of the water fight he dropped his bucket and his classmates took advantage of his vulnerability.

All he could do was run, he said.

However, he made a poor choice in footwear, wearing flip-flops, and one after the other both fell off his feet.

Nonetheless, Adam was game and when it was time to be soaked by the rest of the school he stood tall and got sprayed.

He did not run because "where’s the fun in that?", he said.

He had been looking forward to the water fight all year.

"It’s the best time of the year, I’d say."

St Leonard’s principal Sarah Thompson said the water fight was supposed to be adults against children but it often quickly became an every-man-for-himself type of situation.

She said it was a good way to celebrate the last day of school.

"It’s just lots of fun and then we send soggy kids away at the end of the day for their parents to look after."
