hat is red, blue, yellow and purple, and delighted thousands of preschoolers, as well as their parents, in Dunedin yesterday?

The rock stars of the pre-school world, the Wiggles, performed two sold-out shows at Dunedin's Regent Theatre after an absence from the city of seven years.

The performances were part of the Australian-based group's nationwide tour, with Dunedin and Christchurch the only South Island stopovers.

Many of the children were dressed in Wiggles attire or carried flowers brought to the show especially for character Dorothy the Dinosaur.

Dorothy-shaped balloons, on sale in the foyer, were popular.

The Wiggles performed songs from their latest album which had won their seventh Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) award for best Australian children's release.

Invercargill father David Dudfield had brought daughter Hannah (3) for the 10am show.

His daughter been going "ape" for the past two days and was a "crazy fan", he said.

They bought tickets the day they went on sale.

Hannah said she her favourite Wiggle was Sam (the yellow one) and her favourite dance step was a hop.
