Seeing a wood pigeon or kereru fly into a window with such violence it is killed is a distressing experience some Dunedin bird lovers hope not to go through again.

Dunedin's Project Kereru is importing decorative decals from the United States which are designed to prevent wild birds flying into windows.

Nik Hurring, who runs the Green Island aviary where injured kereru are nursed back to health, said one of the major causes of injury to kereru was from hitting windows of houses and cars.

The WindowAlert decals contained a component that reflected ultraviolet sunlight so birds could "see" the windows, she said.

About seven homes were trialling the decals, which were stuck to the outside of a window, to see if they worked in Dunedin conditions.

One sticker for about 1m sq area of glass was needed.

One house in Newington Ave, which four birds had hit after double glazing was installed, had only one bird strike since - on a window without a decal, she said.

"He has since put a sticker on that window and hasn't had a problem."

Adair Kirkland, who lives in Gladstone Rd south, said six wood pigeons had been killed outright or stunned by flying into her windows since she moved there 12 years ago.

"It's distressing. They hit with such a violence they kill themselves."

She had tried other forms of transfers over the years but nothing had worked, Mrs Kirkland said.

"It's a great idea and if they're successful I'll be speaking to some of my neighbours."

Mrs Hurring had imported the decals and was happy to sell them to anyone with window strike problems.
