Southern women suffer more ankle injuries on Melbourne Cup day than Southern men.
Figures released by the Accident Compensation Corporation yesterday revealed 74 people in Otago had claimed for an ankle injuries on the first Tuesday of November between 2011 and 2014, costing ACC $33,029. Of the injured, 55% were women.
On the same four days in Southland, 30 people sustained ankle injuries, costing ACC $6925 and 60% were women.
On the same days in New Zealand, 1261 people sustained ankle injuries, costing ACC $654, 517.
On the day when the most ankle injuries were sustained resulting in a claim last year, men suffered more (50.7%).
In 2013, the percentage for men was 51% and in 2012, 55%. Dunedin Hospital emergency department clinical leader Caroline Collins said five people were treated for ankle related injuries on Tuesday.
''The documentation we hold is unclear whether any of these injuries definitely relate to race day. However, two of these injuries may possibly be related to it,'' Dr Collins said.
ACC figures revealed 695 claims made last year involved high heel injuries.
