Weekend work has resumed to realign the rail line alongside State Highway 88 to Port Chalmers under Alert Level 3.

The NZ Transport Agency said outstanding work on the first stages of the main trunk rail line realignment, between the St Leonards boat club and Curles Point, resumed at the weekend.

The work was originally due to be finished by the end of August, but because of the Covid-19 Alert Level 4 lockdown work had been paused.

The work was required to accommodate the new 5km St Leonards to Port Chalmers shared path, the transport agency said.

The shift to Alert Level 3 at the start of the month allowed work to resume, but to minimise disruption to trains, work on the realignment was done only over weekends for periods of up to 68 hours.

This weekend’s work was due to finish at 10pm tonight.

Work will resume next Saturday.

Single-lane closures of up to 1km were to operate on State Highway 88 during the work.

The transport agency advised drivers to anticipate delays.
