Zonta Club of Metropolitan Dunedin members (from left) Lyn Herbert, Lyn Farry and Lynette Grave give Iloma Mollison a yellow rose yesterday to mark International Women's Day and Zonta International's Yellow Rose Day.

Mrs Farry, a former president of the Zonta club, said club members handed out 60 yellow roses randomly to women at the entrance to the Centre City New World supermarket between 8am and 8.45am.

"It was very successful. They got such a lovely surprise," she said.

Previously the club had given yellow roses to individual women who had achieved success or gained honours, but it had been decided this year to give roses to women more generally "because we believe all women are special and deserve recognition", she said.

Zonta International is a global service organisation which aims to advance the status of women through service and advocacy.
