Participants in the Otago primary school sports at the Caledonian Ground yesterday.

The Columba College 4x50m relay team broke a 39-year-old record at the annual event. Kate MacBeth, Mia Aoake, Meg Sycamore and Fiona Schultz broke the girls under-12 record with their time of 28.13sec. The old record was set by the Vincent team in 1973. Meg Timu (Mount Aspiring College) broke the girls under-13 70m hurdles record with a time of 10.94sec.

She is the daughter of former All Black John Timu.

Hamish Mears (Silverstream) broke the boys under-12 discus record with a throw of 27.73m. There were 600 pupils from all parts of Otago competing at the annual primary school sports, which have been held since the 1930s. Athletes qualify for the championships by competing at zone meetings in Dunedin and country districts in Otago.
