During uncertain times it is important to focus on what one can change rather than what one cannot, a Dunedin psychologist says.

As uncertainty grows around the Covid-19 pandemic, people are being encouraged to remain as calm as possible.

Clinical psychologist Kumari Valentine said while it was important people accepted their feelings — good or bad — there was no need to panic.

Some simple methods could use to keep calm and get through this period of uncertainty, Dr Valentine said.

One simple action which be used to help ease anxiety was to focus on breathing.

‘‘Focusing on slowing down our breathing is one way we can drop anchor and be calm.’’

It was an exceptionally difficult time for everybody, but particularly those who had existing conditions, including mental health issues, and keeping to a routine was vital, she said.

If people did get to a stage where they felt as if they were no longer coping, it was important for them to contact friends and family in the first instance and then medical help if they needed it.
