An 11-year-old who was behind the wheel of a car being driven erratically and at speeds up to 120kmh has been spoken with by police.
About midnight the child, with a 14-year-old passenger, led police on a high speed chase through Papakura for about two minutes before stopping, Senior Sergeant Stephen Richards of Counties-Manukau police said.
The driver was captured at the scene and the passenger, who had fled, was caught about an hour later.
Police earlier said the boy was escaping Child, Youth and Family custody at the time.
It was not known if the boy was still in custody, Mr Richards said
