Renowned architect Sir Ian Athfield has died in Wellington.
He was 74 years old.
A statement issued by the New Zealand Institute of Architects said Sir Ian was was one of the country's finest architects.
"Our deepest condolences go out to Ath's family, friends and colleagues."
Sir Ian was recognised in the latest New Year Honours list and was appointed a knight companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to architecture.
His works include Wellington's Civic Square, Adam Art Gallery, Wellington Library and his own sprawling residence on the hills of Khandallah.
After becoming a knight, Sir Ian said the practice of architecture could never be attributed to one person.
"It is a contributory involvement with the people you work with and those you work for."
