Police got the call at 5pm on Thursday that a naked man had taken a crowbar and made his way to the back of a Point Chevalier property.
Senior Sergeant Guy Baldwin said the man was located in a swamp near Great North Rd where he resisted police.
"The male was refusing to come out and was resisting staff so the Police dog was deployed.
"The man has then proceeded to assault and attempt to drown the dog before officers stepped in to prevent any further harm to the dog."
By the time the officers got the man in custody he had suffered several dog bites and to be taken to hospital for treatment under police guard
The man was charged with being unlawfully in an enclosed yard, theft of property, injuring a police dog and resisting police.
Baldwin said the officers and the dog were not seriously injured.
"Incidents like this reflect the challenging environment police (and police dogs) work in and demonstrates our continued commitment to ensuring the safety of the community."
The man would appear in Auckland District Court on Friday.
