Labour leader Jacinda Ardern has travelled to Te Aroha for the funeral of her grandmother, who passed away on Monday night.

Ms Ardern and partner Clarke Gayford arrived at St David's Cooperating Parish soon after 11 and walked into the service hand in hand.

Her parents Laurell and Ross Ardern were also at the funeral, which was well attended by the local community.

Ms Ardern will return to the campaign trail straight afterward for the last day of campaigning. She will visit malls in Auckland before events in her Mt Albert electorate.'

Ms Ardern learned her maternal grandmother, Margaret Bottomley, was unwell while she was campaigning on the West Coast last week.

She visited her grandmother in hospital last Sunday.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
