Fatbergs are solid lumps of waste and non-disposable items, such as wet wipes, found in sewer systems.
The Nelson City Council said heavy rainfall overnight on Monday led to a pipe failure on Paru Paru Rd resulting in untreated, diluted wastewater flowing into Saltwater Creek, the mouth of the Maitai River and Nelson Haven.
Flooding and tidal conditions on Tuesday then created the perfect storm to wash material from the overflow ashore, the council said.
There were reports of some dogs eating fatbergs.
While they are not considered dangerous to pets, it is recommended they avoid them.
Mana whenua has placed a rāhui over the Maitai River and surrounding estuary as a precaution due to the potential risk of water contamination.
The rāhui was in place to protect the health and safety of people, environment and kaimoana, and would remain until further notice.
The council was monitoring water quality and the community would be notified when it was safe to be lifted.
People were asked to avoid contact with the water, including swimming, fishing and gathering food.
