Thousands of texts about non-existant emergencies have caused confusion among firefighters.
Fire and Emergency said its alert system was undergoing testing on Tuesday morning, when brigades were pinged about historic emergencies.
FENZ said it regretted the error that saw 6500 texts sent out about old incidents before the test was shut down.
A spokesperson for the organisation said while some firefighters realised the calls were historic, other volunteers showed up at their stations.
They said the technical problem has since been fixed.
"Fire and Emergency regrets any inconvenience and apologises to our volunteers as a result of this issue, noting the important role they play in protecting their communities," the spokesperson said.
The professional firefighters union said career firefighters were also caught up in the glitch, which caused some confusion when the station sirens remained silent.
