A Christchurch driver has handed himself into police following a deadly hit-and-run on Saturday night.
One man died and another was injured when they were hit by a car in Shands Road, Hornby, about 10.20pm.
Police are looking into reports the cars were racing.
The driver of a red Toyota who was being sought in connection to the crash handed himself into the Christchurch Central Police station yesterday, police reported last night.
The occupants of a Suzuki Swift, which might have been one of the cars involved, had also come forward yesterday
Witnesses said two vehicles were travelling in the same direction when one struck pedestrians on the side of the road.
Neither car stopped at the scene.
Shands Rd resident Margaret Harrington said that from about 10.20pm on Saturday she heard "boy racers" travelling at speed past her gate.
"It sounded like hundreds of them. You could tell that some of them were passing each other," she said.
Meanwhile, a 7-year-old girl was killed when she was run over near Twizel, in south Canterbury, yesterday.
The incident happened about midday at a property off State Highway 8, police said.
It has been reported the girl's father was driving the vehicle.
Also yesterday afternoon, one person died following a head-on collision on State Highway 25A, the Kopu-Hikuai Road at the southern end of the Coromandel Peninsula, just before 3pm.
Earlier in the day a two-car collision on State Highway 1 near Brynderwyn also claimed the life of one person and left a number of passengers needing treatment at Whangarei Hospital.
The accident occurred around 9.45am, 400 metres south of the top of Brynderwyn Hills when a southbound car and a four-wheel-drive heading north collided.
It was understood the dead person was a male passenger in the car.
In another pedestrian hit-and-run, a man in his 20s suffered multiple serious injuries after being hit by a car outside Burger King in Moorhouse Ave in Christchurch just before 3am yesterday.
A car with two male occupants struck the man then sped off.
Restaurant staff reported that a physical altercation had broken out between a man on foot and the passenger of a car in the drive-through earlier.
