A young man has died after crashing into a roadside bank near Mount Bruce, about 25 km north of Masterton this morning.
An ambulance spokesman said emergency services were alerted to the accident just before 9am.
The man, believed in his 20s, was in a critical "but deteriorating" condition when staff arrived.
"Initially, there was a road transport commenced towards Masterton Hospital."
An advanced paramedic was also flown in by helicopter to assist with treatment, the spokesman said.
"Unfortunately they were unable to revert the patient and the patient died at the back of the ambulance."
No other vehicles were involved. Police are investigating the accident.
