It has been au revoir France and ciao Italy as more New Zealanders opted to stay at home rather than travel abroad.
Statistics New Zealand figures reveal a decline in the number of New Zealanders travelling on short-term overseas holidays for the year ending November 2009, compared with the same period last year.
Double digit drops were recorded for New Caledonia (-36.8), Vanuatu (-11.6%), Taiwan (-10.9%), France (-12.9%) and Italy (-19%).
While most countries recorded a decrease in the number of New Zealanders travelling to their shores, a handful of countries bucked the trend.
The Cook Islands (2.8%) Samoa (9.6%), India (5.2%), Indonesia (1%), Philippines (2.6%), Thailand (0.9%) and Germany (1.8%), all recorded gains.
For the year ending November, 1,921,103 New Zealanders departed on short-term (less than a year) overseas trips, 58,387 fewer than in the same period last year.
Australia remained the most popular destination, with 942,572 visits, a decline of 7,579 or -0.8%.
Fiji was the next popular destination (91,477 visits), followed by the United States (88,515), and the United Kingdom (87,180).
