A teenage girl remains in a critical condition in Auckland Hospital today after being bowled over by a runaway motorbike at a motocross meeting on Sunday.
Elaina Gentile, 16, of Pakuranga, had been competing at the Ardmore Motocross Park, southeast of Auckland, but was a spectator at the side of the track with her family when hit.
Witnesses told The New Zealand Herald that a rider in a veterans' race landed badly after a jump, lost his grip on the handlebars, and was thrown off the back of his machine.
The bike hit a stack of tyres before flying through the air and striking Elaina on the head, knocking her unconscious.
She had competed in one race before the accident and was still in her gear except for her helmet when struck.
She underwent emergency surgery at Auckland Hospital on Sunday night and remains in a critical condition today.
The police serious crash unit is investigating.
