New Zealand supermodel Rachel Hunter was still being coy about the big sparkler on her ring finger when she visited rural Waikato today, but her ice hockey playing partner apparently gave the game away.

Speculation has been rife about their engagement since Hunter and Jarret Stoll, who at 26 is 13 years her junior, arrived in Auckland to visit her mother Janeen.

Hunter and Stoll, a Canadian who plays for the Los Angeles Kings, visited Hautapu Primary School near Cambridge today to help launch a reading initiative for children.

While the couple said nothing on camera about impending nuptials, 3 News reported Stoll had confirmed they were engaged -- telling its reporter "the proposal was romantic" but no wedding date had been set.

Nearly 10 years ago Hunter split from husband Rod Stewart, 63, who last year wed a slightly younger model, Penny Lancaster, 37.

Hunter, the Storylines Trust and the Tip Top ice cream brand have offered $50,000 worth of books to primary schools to encourage more people to read aloud to children.

Trust chairwoman Dr Libby Limbrick said reading aloud to children was important to encourage children to be good readers and love reading.

At today's launch Hunter was given a new copy of her favourite children's book, the Tales of Jeremy Fisher by Beatrix Potter, first published in 1906.

Hunter later visited a dairy farm where a calf gave her a big lick on the cheek and lips.
