Immigration hits record high

New Zealand had a new record set with the amount of migrants that arrived in January this year.

The net gain of migrants last month was 5500 and set a new all-time high for migrants arriving in a month.

The annual gain of migrants in the year to January 2015 was more than double the amount in the year to January 2014.

There were 53,800 new migrants to our country last year, more than double the 25,700 that arrived in the year to January 2014.

Visitor arrivals were up 3 per cent last month, compared to January 2014, with 302,400 people visiting the country.

Australia was our biggest source of visitors, while the number of visitors arriving from China fell compared to January 2014.

The biggest net gain of migrants in the year to January 2015 was from India, the majority of whom came on student visas.

The other biggest net gains in migrants were from China, the United Kingdom, and the Philippines.

New Zealanders went on 133,800 overseas trips in January 2015, up 5 per cent from January 2014.

More holiday-makers were bound to the United States and Fiji, but the majority were still crossing the Tasman to holiday in Australia.
