Man charged with Otaki Beach murder

A Hamilton man has been charged with murder after the body of a 30-year-old Huntly man was found on Otaki Beach.

Police have today identified the man as Edward Tahakura.

He was discovered at the by a member of the public on Thursday morning.

"A post mortem has been completed and officers are working with the Coroner in order to have Edward's body returned to his family," Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said.

A 24-year-old man will appear in Hamilton District Court today after he was arrested late last night in Hamilton in relation to Mr Tahakura's death.

"The police investigation will be on-going as we speak to Edward's family and friends, and the man charged with his murder," Mr Sheridan said.

"We will be establishing why Edward and the man were at Otaki Beach. Outside of this I cannot discuss any aspects of our homicide investigation any further."

The scene examination at the beach was now completed.

"I want to thank the Otaki community and local media for their assistance in our area inquires," Mr Sheridan said.
