A man is dead after losing control of his ute in the isolated settlement of Taharoa, 70km west of Otorohanga.
Senior Sergeant Rob Van Kalken said the crash happened at the Ironsands industrial site in Taharoa Road about 8.30am.
"We understand the driver was reversing his vehicle on the industrial property when it has struck an object,'' he said.
"Given there is poor communications in the area it is not possible to establish what the contributing factors were in the crash. However we understand the man had a pre-existing medical condition."
Inquiries were continuing.
