Metservice focus switches from snow to rain

Metservice issued a heavy rain watch for the Nelson Ranges today and the Hawke's Bay Ranges and Gisborne tomorrow as the snowfalls ease around Queenstown.

Forecaster Gerard Barrow told NZPA that it was going to be unsettled everywhere over the next few days.

The snow that closed Queenstown schools today and prompted severe weather warnings was now easing to showers and Mr Barrow said most road snow warnings would expire over the next few hours or be lifted.

Concerns for children travelling to school prompted Queenstown Primary School and Wakatipu High School to close for the day, and police urged people not to use the roads unless necessary.

About 5cm of snow fell around the Queenstown area today.

"Basically they have had as much snow as they are going to get. The snow will now be falling as showers," Mr Barrow said.

Metservice issued a severe weather watch for the Nelson Ranges today as a frontal band moved into the area. Heavy falls are expected to continue until this evening.

On Thursday people in the Hawke's Bay Ranges and Gisborne area can expect heavy falls.

People in these three areas are advised to keep track of forecasts.
