Murderer on parole convicted of assault

A convicted murderer was back in court yesterday.

Nigel Shane Johnstone, 36, was convicted in Invercargill District Court for assaulting and threatening to injure his partner, The Southland Times reported.

Crown prosecutor Mike Mika said Johnstone grabbed the woman by the hair, dragged her across the floor, held a bottle above her head and threatened to "smash her face in".

Johnstone was jailed for life in 1996 for murdering Anton Sherlock near Lumsden.

When he was released in September 2006, the Parole Board ruled he was to remain on parole for life.

Johnstone was remanded in custody for sentencing on Thursday.
