Police car rammed in high-speed pursuit

A police patrol car was rammed during a pursuit at speeds up to 150kmh in Wellington last night.

The owner of a Toyota Hilux Surf saw their car being stolen and reported it to police about 11.30pm.

Officers on State Highway 1 came across the stolen car near the Tinakori Rd intersection.

"We located the stolen vehicle travelling north on State Highway 1, the lights and sirens were activated and the vehicle failed to stop," Inspector Marty Parker said.

The four-wheel-drive drove at speeds up to 150kmh on the highway before being slowed down at Ngauranga Gorge, Mr Parker said.

After driving off the highway at the Newlands Rd off-ramp, the stolen car stopped and reversed into the pursuing police vehicle.

Officers inside the car were uninjured but the vehicle was "disabled", Mr Parker said.

The stolen car was later found abandoned on Sheridan Tce in Johnsonville.

Police dogs were unable to track the driver.

Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
