Police investigate death of 19-year-old man in crash

Police are investigating the death of a 19-year-old Lower Hutt man in a car crash today.

The crash, involving only one car, happened at 10.20am in Akatarawa Road, Upper Hutt, near the cemetery. The dead man was a passenger in the vehicle.

The driver, a 20-year-old Lower Hutt man, was not injured.

Upper Hutt police want to hear from anyone who was travelling on Akatarawa Road this morning and saw a white Subaru WRX before the crash.

Inspector Mike Hill, Upper Hutt area commander, said the crash was one "that simply didn't need to happen".

"Preliminary indications are that speed or acceleration may have been a factor in the crash," he said.

"This is more than just our first fatal crash in the past 18 months, this is tragedy for two families that will be felt by them for years to come."

Mr Hill said it was also a reminder to people to drive to the conditions.
