Police have swarmed a south Auckland property where an officer has been shot.

Police said they were called to Flat Bush just about 9.30am on Monday, before a gun was fired at police.

An officer suffered "non-life-threatening" injuries, police said.

A large number of police, some armed, have blocked off the road between Baverstock and Stancombe Road.

Police have told RNZ they're speaking via phone with someone who is holed up inside a flat.

They say the person is alone inside.

A large number of cars are being redirected away from the cordon.

An RNZ reporter at the scene also saw a police dog inside the cordon.

Nearby Sancta Maria College and Sancta Maria Catholic Primary School were both in lockdown.

"All students and staff are accounted for and are safely inside school buildings," Sancta Maria College posted on its website.

"Please do not come to the school or phone the school."

Sancta Maria Catholic Primary School said all students are safe and the lockdown was a precautionary measure.
