The public support a call for new national standards to be trialled, a poll shows.
Primary teachers' union the NZEI commissioned the UMR telephone poll of 750 adults which found strong support for a trial.
Teachers have been calling for a trial, but the Government has rejected that and the standards are in place now.
The Government said the new standards were vital to improve skills because one in five students leave school without the basic skills they need to succeed in life.
Of those polled, 66 percent said the standards should be tested and only 18 percent disagreed.
Respondents with dependent children were split 72 percent in favour and 15 percent against. Of those without children, 62 percent were in favour and 20 percent.
Of those participants who had children in primary school 71 percent supported a trial.
NZEI President Frances Nelson said the poll showed the Government did not have parental support for implementing the standards without a trial.
The poll was done between February 18 and 22 and had an margin of error of 3.6 percent.
