A woman flown to Tauranga Hospital after a serious crash near Gisborne yesterday remains in a critical condition this morning.
The 25-year-old woman had been travelling through Waioeka Gorge with two girls, aged 4 and 8, when the car left the road and plunged 15m into the Waioeka River - becoming partially submerged.
A hospital spokesman said the woman was this morning in a critical condition and the two girls were both 'comfortable'.
The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter joined Rotorua BayTrust Rescue Helicopter in the call to help save the three but were unable to reach the crash site because of poor weather.
The three were rescued with ropes and transported by road ambulance to the helicopters.
