The former top police officer for the Southern district has been made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the New Zealand police.

Detective Superintendent Nicholas (Nick) Perry was appointed as Southern police district commander for a five-year term in 2000.

In 2004, he moved to Wellington to lead Operation Austin, a police team investigating historic rape allegations against three police officers.

He has since held roles as the National Crime Manager, in the office of the commissioner and is now New Zealand's police liaison officer to Britain, a sole-charge position with an office at the New Zealand High Commission in London.

He has been a police officer since 1970.

His achievements have included the establishment of Maori advisory groups to police at Otakou, on the Otago Peninsula and Murihiku, Southland; the creation of iwi liaison roles and the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Murihiku runanga in 2002.

He also developed a strategic partnership between police and the University of Otago for leadership development for middle and senior police supervisors.
