Teen crash victim named

A Papamoa teenager who died after becoming trapped in a car following a crash near Tauranga on Wednesday has been named by police.

Kruz Delma Waitohi Waaka, 18, was a front seat passenger in a blue Subaru which had been heading towards State Highway 2 when it collided with a truck on Plummers Point Rd in Whakamarama about 5.15pm.

Sergeant Scott Merritt of Tauranga police earlier said it appeared the car, carrying three occupants, crossed the centre line before the collision.

Mr Waaka was trapped in the car and died at the scene despite rescuers' efforts to save him.

The car's driver and a rear seat passenger were taken to Tauranga Hospital with moderate injuries. The driver of the truck, which was carrying flowers, was uninjured.

Police today said the incident was under investigation and no further information was available at this stage.
