Charges after double-shooting, robbery

A 23-year-old man has been charged in connection with the shooting of two women in Rolleston and the robbery of a hotel in Ashburton last night.

Canterbury police swooped on a Rakaia property just before 7am today in the hunt for the shooting suspect. The man was taken into custody without incident.

The raid came after police were called to a Newtons Rd property in Rolleston about 9.30pm yesterday. An area was cordoned off and dozens of police and ambulances descended on the area after gunfire was heard.

Police today said the arrested man was known to both his victims, who are in Christchurch Hospital being treated for gunshot wounds.

The man will face two charges of injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, in relation to the incident.

It was thought that an armed robbery at an Ashburton hotel had been committed by a different man; however, police this afternoon said the same man would face a charge of aggravated robbery in relation to the robbery.

Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney said the man entered the Ashburton Hotel on Racecourse Rd, firing a shot into air before taking cash.

Det Insp Sweeney said up to five people were inside the hotel at the time. Nobody was injured.

He will appear in Christchurch District Court this afternoon.
