Woman stable after cake shop crash

The Whangarei woman who received serious injuries when a car crashed into a cake shop, shunting her and her 5-year-old daughter into a cake cabinet, is now in a stable conditions.

Family and friends of the 39-year-old woman were very shaken by the freak accident, in which she sustained broken bones and internal injures when a yellow Suzuki Swift ploughed through the front of the Cheesecake Shop on Tarawera Rd about 11am on Tuesday.

The woman was ordering a birthday cake for her daughter when an elderly man crashed the car through the store. Enveloping her daughter with her body, the woman took the brunt of the force as they were pushed inside the cabinet - breaking it and sending smashed glass throughout the store.

It was understood both her legs were broken, along with her pelvis, and she had a raft of internal injuries.

The woman was taken to Northland Base Hospital in a serious condition and her daughter and the 73-year-old driver were taken with moderate injuries.

While the man and the girl were discharged that day, the woman was still receiving treatment but was now in a ward and in a stable condition, said a Northland DHB spokeswoman.

When contacted by the New Zealand Herald, the woman and her family were too upset to speak about the accident.

A friend of the family, who did not wish to be named, said their family and wider group of friends were very upset by the incident.

"They are just trying to keep it together," she said. "The little girl starts school next week and she is not doing too well emotionally."

The child was being cared for by her grandmother, who was keeping those close to the family updated on their progress.

Whangarei Police were still investigating the accident, and it was too early to know if charges would be laid.
